U.S. Government May Upgrade English Fluency Requirements for Truckers

This morning's USA Today contains an article on the federal government working to tighten the rules requiring commercial truck drivers to understand English. Looking to promote safety on the road, police issued more than 25,000 tickets last year to commercial drivers for not being able to speak English well enough to speak with police.

More than 40 states currently permit commercial drivers license applicants to take the written test in a language other than English. However, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently proposed rules that would require individuals to speak English during the road test and vehicle inspection, and eliminate the use of interpreters.
